How to Clean Your Dishwasher

There are lots of tips and tricks to cleaning your dishwasher. Here’s a step by step guide to making sure your dishwasher is sparkling clean, inside and out!

Gather your supplies. You’ll need:

  • Warm water
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Toothbrush
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Rubber gloves
  • Remove the filter, utensil holders, and dishwasher racks
  • Put them in the sink to soak in hot water for up to 30 minutes; this loosens any debris stuck to them. Use white vinegar or a strong dish soap to scrub them clean with the toothbrush.

Clear any debris in the dishwasher.

Now that you’ve got space to see everything in the dishwasher, clear out any and all particulates and debris that you find.

Run the dishwasher on a hot water cycle with vinegar

Fill a dishwasher-safe bowl with 1 cup of white vinegar and place it on the bottom of the empty dishwasher. Set the dishwasher to run on a hot water cycle. The vinegar will break down any remaining bits of food, grease, soap scum, residue, and any other leftover grime.

Run another short wash cycle with baking soda

When the first cycle ends, remove the bowl and sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda along the bottom of the dishwasher. Run it on a short cycle. The baking soda will remove stains and freshen the dishwasher.

Clean the outside of the door

Spray the outside of the door with a cleaner specifically designed for the kind of material your door is made of. Wipe it down with a microfiber cloth towel.

Cleaning your dishwasher ensures your dishes are effectively sanitized and cleaned. Doing this once a month or so will guarantee that your dishware is always sparkling clean.
